Polytunnel Construction and Installation Services

Anyone can have a go at polytunnel installation a small garden polytunnel, as most kits come with instructions and as long as you have some basic D.I.Y. Skills that will help when you start your polytunnel construction, the right tools for the job, oh! And a few friends to lend a hand, especially when placing and fitting the cover over the hoop frame. Just ensure you located the polytunnel in the best position to take advantage of the sun availability and if located in an area of strong winds, think about setting it next to a natural windbreak or fence, but not to close as to damage the polythene covering.

Polytunnel Construction and Polytunnel Installation

1. Talk with the supplier to ensure your intended polytunnel construction is fit for purpose for the crops or plants you intend to grow.

2. You may need to check with your local authority to see if any planning permission is required. This is not normally required dependant on the size and where you intend to place it.

3. Check all kit parts are delivered with the purchase.

4. Read the instructions first and follow the advice.

4. Prepare and clear the ground before installation and make sure it is as level as possible.

5. Better to choose a warm, non-windy day

Tools required

1. Ladders if required, dependant on the height of the tunnel.

2. Spades and wheel-barrow for preparation.

3. Hammers

4.  Screwdrivers

5. Adjustable spanners

6. Good size spirit level

7. Wood for blocks and levelling

8. Dependant on how it is being anchored (cement for foundation tubes)

9. Tape measure.

10.  If! Not included Hot Spot Tape for applying to the hoop frame

Polytunnel Installation

Good ground preparation is the key to success! Mark out where the anchor plates for the foundation tubes will be placed, if you are fixing with base rails to each anchor point, this ensures secure rigidity against strong winds. Cement in your foundation tubes, check and mark the base positioning ensuring they are evenly-placed and all is square and level, hammer the foundation tubes into the ground using the wooden block to protect against damage when positioning. If just trenching the polythene cover into the soil, ensure the cover is dug into the soil for the rain to run off and not collect within the polythene.

 Polytunnel Construction

Connect the individual hoop sections together, slide the hoop ends over foundation tubes, connect the support struts to the hoops, ensure you use the right fixings and they are positioned correctly, this will ensure the cover can be easily slid into position without catching on any wrongly fitted fittings. Then attach the ridge pole, corner bracings and access door. Check everything is in place correctly and all lined up properly, check and tighten all fittings and nothing is protruding out from the frame.

Holding the cover in place can be achieved in two ways!

1. Attaching the polythene cover to the base rails by pinning, this offers better rigidity and the advantage of being secure against strong winds

2. Trenching! Is just burying the polythene into a 30/40 cm deep trench, into the ground.

Before placing the polythene cover over the frame apply the Anti-Hot -Spot-Tape to protect the area between the metal hoops and the cover. Because of the metal frame absorbing natural heat, using the tape helps prevent heat degradation and enhance the life of the covering.

Clear all tools and any stones or debris from the area, slide the cover over the frame, preferably with some help to avoid snagging and it fits evenly on all sides. Pin the cover to the base rails making sure it has the correct amount of tension or if trenching is kept taut when trenching into the soil.

Try to select a good weather day, and if possible fix the access doors on the same day, just in case the weather deteriorates. Build the door frames and cover with the polythene, if sliding doors are installed ensure the runner it slides on is completely level and securely attached to the door frame, hinge type fixing simply hold the door in place to the frame mark it do it hangs correctly and is square to the opening.
