What Are The Advantages Of Polytunnel Gardening?
Are you thinking about installing a polytunnel in your garden? You are not the only gardener or homeowner thinking about installing a polytunnel in your garden. If you already have a polytunnel, you can opt for a polytunnel refurbishment instead.
When
we moved into a property that already had two polytunnels, I was not sure how I
felt about them. The previous homeowner used to grow carnations and roses in
them, but we felt that was not for us.
As
all of the roses and carnations were grown in pots, we decided to sell them off
and start again. We wanted to grow what we like, which includes exotic
vegetables, fruits, mushrooms and succulents. As long as you refurbish an
existing tunnel in the right way, you can grow pretty much anything in them.
This
Is What I Have Learned About Polytunnels So Far
We
have not been doing polytunnel gardening for very long. Our adventure started
in 2017 when we brought an older style property with rather a lot of land.
The
polytunnels that we inherited were a bit run down. To our surprise, the
polytunnel repairs have not cost as much as we were expecting, so we decided to
refurbish both tunnels. Once the polytunnel refurbishment was complete, we
started to explore how we could best use the tunnels.
Before
we knew it, we were sharing our repaired polytunnels with chickens and what was
supposed to be a Christmas turkey. Needless to say, Mr Arnold as we call him is
still around and has taken charge of what he considers to be his own flock of
Belgian Malinois dogs.
Keeping
Up With Repairs
Keeping
up with polytunnel repairs is an essential part of the picture. If you look
after your tunnel and inspect it on a regular basis, you will find that you
don't have to do that many repairs. Fortunately for me, my husband is pretty handy
and does enjoy the tunnels as much as I do.
If
you can't repair your tunnel yourself, you will find that most companies or
polytunnel construction services run an after-sales service. They are happy to
come along and help you to repair and maintain your tunnel.
After
strong winds and heavy rains, inspecting your tunnel is very important. Most of
the time, you are going to be lucky but hail can damage your tunnel. When you
are serious about polytunnel gardening and growing produce in your polytunnel,
you do need to look after it.
You
should also take out insurance for your polytunnel just in case you face a hefty
polytunnel repairs bill.
I
love the idea of polytunnel refurbishment. If you have a new growing idea or
would like to keep poultry in your tunnel, considering a refurbishment is a
great idea.
My
Final Thoughts As A Polytunnel Gardener
I
love my polytunnels and spend hours in them. They have turned me into a much
more adventurous gardener. As a former lady combat medic, I would not have
thought it would have been something that I would enjoy. But, now I have to
confess that I am rather addicted to both of our polytunnels.
